Halle Jacobs is dealing with writer’s block, a recent breakup, and high expectations from family and school. She excels academically but feels inexperienced and uncertain when it comes to love. 
Henry Turner has just been made captain of the hockey team — a role he didn’t ask for — and is also struggling in a demanding class under a professor he dislikes. He fears failing and letting people down.

Their paths cross when Henry accidentally crashes Halle’s book club. Halle offers to help him with the class in exchange for Henry helping her gain real‑life romantic experiences to fuel her novel writing. They agree on a “rule book” that—among other things—stipulates they won’t fall in love.

Through tutoring sessions, book club meetings, shared moments, and tough conversations, Halle and Henry grow closer. Halle confronts her tendency to put others first, and Henry grapples with leadership, responsibility, and expectations. Their connection deepens more naturally than planned

As feelings intensify, they both face challenges: self‑doubt, family expectations, past relationships (especially Halle’s ex), and fear of messing up their friendship. Eventually, they must decide whether to risk the rules they made for a chance at something more real.
